For the beginning of a sore throat:
Take a few drops of Botanica organic oregano oil on the tongue, and follow with a few sips of Chamomile tea or other herbal tea, to dilute the oregano oil and move it into the throat area. Oregano oil is a powerful antibiotic which will stop a throat infection (sore throat) in its early stages. My wife and I use this product whenever necessary.

For heavy, lung and sinus congestion, I recommend an Ayurvedic remedy:
Along with the warm water, neti pot flush....http://www.blissful-wisdom.com/preventing-sinus-infection-and-colds-with-a-neti-pot-flush.html
This treatment cured my daughter who suffered from pneumonia and sinus infection for three months. Doctors could only prescribe antibiotics, which in her case did nothing to rid the illness.
Follow this remedy until symptoms disappear (usually within ten to 14 days)
1) Two to three times per day: 1 teaspoon unpasteurized honey with 1 tsp organic turmeric powder.
2) Add five drops pure Essential Camphor oil to one cup of Maharishi Ayurveda Kapha Tea
Drink two cups per day.
3) Eat lightly... split pea soup and green beans ( As you feel better you may introduce green asparagus, green brussel sprouts or green broccoli). Eat whole grain, organic, flat bread without rising agents such as yeast, etc. Cooked barley flakes as a cereal, but avoid dairy or mucous-producing foods. Avoid rice, potatoes and starchy foods. (Ever notice how split pea soup or dahl sets up and becomes firm as it absorbs the water of the soup. Well, that is how this soup helps to absorb the excess moisture in the lungs.)
4) After a week (or when excess mucous decreases dramatically) , gradually add homemade, chicken and vegetable soup into the diet. When feeling stronger, slowly shift to a regular, healthy diet. Stay on course. Avoid the old, poor diet habits.
Tips
1) You may also drink either of these beneficial teas throughout the day.
Flora Bronchial Tea
Traditional Medicinals Organic Throat Formula
Also, Breathe Easy Tea.
(Organic apple juice with added vitamin C is also a good fluid to drink)
2) Have at least one hot shower per day to loosen up the sinuses and lungs. Utilize the neti pot. Become efficient at it. It will help clear the sinus cavities as they seem to continually fill with infected mucous.
3) Don't swallow the discharge from your lungs or sinuses. Spit it out into the toilet or bathroom sink, and always rinse the sink clean afterwards.
4) For ease in sleeping and breathing, place a number of pillows under your upper back, neck, and head, so that your head is elevated. Rest as often as possible. Let your body become feverish, as the high heat destroys harmful bacteria and infection.
5) Make sure you are not having an allergic reaction to the dust mites or animal hair in your carpets or furniture. Vacuum the house at least twice a week, and clean the carpets twice a year.
6) Keep two windows in the house always open a 1/4 inch to provide air circulation. There is a reason fans are installed in bathrooms. Often, harmful mold will develop around window ledges because the moist air has no where to go. Remove sources of mold on walls and windows frames.
7) As you are feeling stronger, eat fresh oranges....and drink plenty of organic apple juice.
8) Finally, if you do not notice any significant change in your condition after 10 days, then it would be best to go to the doctor and ask for a prescription to an antibiotic such as 'clarithromycin' 500 mg twice daily with food. (If you go the route of antibiotics, then eat your meal and wait 45 - 60 minutes before taking the antibiotic. This way you'll allow a great deal of digestion to occur before bringing in the antibiotic. I have found that taking an antibiotic too early will cause diarrhea.)
Follow up for at least a few month's with Pro-biotics every day.
The breathers and puffers are over-rated and expensive. Keep up with the neti pot flushes and diet recommendations.
Never kid around when your health is at stake.
