Sometimes it takes a lifetime to realize that meaningful fulfillment can elude even the most well-off individuals. During my travels to India I learned that a life of selfishness is an empty life.
On the other hand, 'selfless service' opens the heart and upholds the quality of family and social life. This is the example set by the living masters of selfless service. 'Family life, the world community and the natural environment can be nurtured by transforming our attitude and actions'. This is their gift to us all.
When this inner conviction to 'selfless service' is expressed in daily life, a meaningful sense of joy arises. This is the transformation that each of us may participate in.
Recent living masters who have made a difference:
Mata Amritanandamayi Devi
With only a grade eight education, her accomplishments in India range from building multiple orphanages, vocational training schools, hospitals, colleges, homes for earthquake and tsunami victims. Her ongoing efforts to uplift, educate, and aid families in hardship never cease. Her example is one of loving compassion and service in action. Recently, as shown in the video below, this Mahatma has inspired her college students to embark on a campaign to 'clean up' the land and waterways of India.
shifted from living a quiet life as a Catholic nun, to being actively involved in 'assisting the poor and helpless'. Her efforts in creating orphanages and hospitals for the sick and needy of India acted as a stepping stone to further humanitarian efforts across the globe. Her legendary selfless activities were an inspiration to all caring persons. See my story titled: The Jist of Christianity.
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi
His selfless efforts brought the practice of meditation to over 4 million world citizens in a time when meditation was literally unknown and unexplored. Meditation soon became accepted by the Western culture as an alternative to 'drug abuse'... It became known as a practice to restore vitality while complimenting one's daily work routine. Once accepted, It opened the door to the other healing arts and therapies such as shiatsu, acupuncture, reflexology, massage therapy, yoga exercise, pranayama breathing, tai chi, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Aryurvedic diet and health remedies, and the use of organic and natural healing foods and herbs to promote healing and health.
