During my travels to a couple of ashrams in India I came across certain persons from the West who called themselves "healers". Some would pass out their business card and some would just hint of their 'healing' expertise. In my eyes, the pomp and show kind of went against the grain, so to speak. I mean, being an instrument of Life's healing energy is just that - being an instrument.
Being an instrument is like being a length of hollow bamboo through which flows the healing waters of the Divine. The hollow bamboo does nothing but allow the waters of Divine healing energy to flow. Ramana Maharishi once wrote: "Even though a Master has no desire for miracles, miracles happen in his presence".
During lunch one afternoon, at one of the Indian ashrams, I overheard an intriguing short story regarding a sincere student and his wise Master. The student, in his curiosity, had asked his Master about the difference between 'human' will and God's will. The Master answered that there is only the will of the One Divine Source.
Both Master and student were standing on the temple steps at the time, and the Master pointed to a young woman in the centre of the courtyard. With calm authority he said to the student, "You see that woman quietly standing there? In a moment she is going to spin in a circle, jump up and down and, with raised arms, shout 'hallelujah'." Sure enough, a moment later, the woman spun in a circle, jumped up and down and, with raised arms, began singing out 'hallelujah'. The Master then instructed his student to go to the woman and ask her why she had acted in the manner they had just witnessed.
A while later, the student returned to his Master's side; "She told me she just suddenly had the inclination to spin and jump about." To which the Master replied, "Where do you suppose she got that inclination from?" And the student answered that he believed that it was from her own will to spin and jump about. The Master then simply stated: "No, my son, it was My will that caused her to spin and jump." Knowing that the Master is without ego, and stands united with Divine Source, the student began to comprehend that, simply put, there is only the will of the One.
A few weeks later, while traveling on a festival tour with a certain Mahatma, we travelers from the West were invited to ask some questions. Remembering the story I had heard at the ashram weeks earlier, I thought this was a proper time to voice a concern I had. I asked, "If God's will is ever manifesting as the will within all living beings, and human will is only an illusion, are we supposed to think about that and remember that....or is that only mere mood-making?" The head swami of the entourage bluntly stated, "It sounds to complicated to me." Whereupon the Mahatma quickly put him in his place, "The question is an intelligent one. He is right. One is to continually remember that God is the author of all activity. Do your best to imagine and remember that the will of God is within and behind everything that is perceived. Thus, when there is a great achievement one will not take the credit for it and, on the other hand, when a disaster occurs one will not sink with the ship. The time will come when God's presence will be felt within each moment. The time will dawn when you will perceive the will of the Divine within everything."
Because the Divine manifests as all of life and as all living beings, who then is the essential author of all 'healing'? Who, really, is healing whom? Who can ever be separate from the will of the One?
